The Key West Lighthouse: A Beacon of History
Perched high above the island, the Key West Lighthouse stands as a timeless sentinel, offering a captivating glimpse into Key West’s rich maritime past. This iconic landmark’s story began in 1825, when the original tower was erected to guide ships through the hazardous coral reefs surrounding our shores. Tragically, a powerful hurricane in 1846 destroyed that first structure.
Undaunted, a new, sturdier lighthouse was completed in 1848, built further inland to withstand future storms. Over the decades, it was gradually extended to its present height of 86 feet, ensuring its beam could pierce through the darkness and reach vessels far at sea. Interestingly, it holds a unique place in history as one of the few lighthouses in the U.S. to be tended by a female keeper, Barbara Mabrity, for over 30 years.
Decommissioned in 1969 with the advent of modern navigation, the Key West Lighthouse and its charming Keeper’s Quarters now serve as a fascinating museum. Visitors are invited to ascend the 88 steps to the top, where breathtaking panoramic views of Key West and the surrounding turquoise waters await. Inside, engaging exhibits share the compelling stories of the courageous lighthouse keepers and the island’s deep connection to the sea.
